Like all Marvel movies, Avengers Endgame is packed with iconic quotes, from smart quips to heartfelt lines about grief as our favorite characters deal with losing their beloved friends and family.
Even in a movie full of great quotes, Thanos (portrayed by the amazing Josh Brolin) steals the show and is one of the best villains ever.
Here are some of the best Thanos quotes from the awesome superhero movie Avengers: Endgame.
1. “I am… inevitable.”
“I am…inevitable” is one of Thanos’s taglines throughout his appearances in Marvel movies. Josh Brolin, who plays Thanos, always delivers this line with gravitas.
It gives us an insight into the villain’s psyche. He doesn’t see himself as a bad guy but as something as inevitable as a natural disaster, just part of the natural order of things.
When he says this line in Endgame, the context is different. Thanos repeats this line for the last time in the final battle scene when he is about to Thanos-snap again.
However, this time, Tony Stark steals the infinity gauntlet from him and ends his reign of terror. In the end, Thanos was not as inevitable as he thought. It’s still my favorite quote.
2. “The universe required correction. After that, the stones served no purpose beyond temptation.”
Thanos says this memorable quote after the Avengers find him in his hideout and demand the Infinity Stones so they can reverse his actions that killed off half of the world.
However, the crew is shocked that Thanos has destroyed the stones, some of the planet’s most powerful tools.
The quote sets into motion the rest of the movie’s plot, which is figuring out a way to time travel and undo Thanos’s actions once and for all. It shows our heroes that the journey won’t be as easy as they thought this time.
It also gives us a fascinating insight into Thanos as a character. He is power-hungry but a monster who deludes himself into thinking he has a mission. Once he fulfilled that mission, he would rather destroy the items that gave him power than be tempted to use them improperly.
3. “It knows not what is lost, but only what it has been given… a grateful universe.”
This is another iconic line from the epic final battle in Endgame. After the Avengers collect the stones to undo what Thanos did, a time-traveling Thanos returns and gets the stones.
He announces his grand plans to destroy the universe this time and create a new one that is entirely in his power, and he doesn’t know about the evils he did.
The quote also shows us Thanos’s philosophy. He doesn’t consider the disappearance of half of humanity a tragedy. He expects people to be grateful to him for saving the universe from the threat of overpopulation that he decided would kill us all.
He sees himself as an agent of the universe and nature, not a selfish being wanting power. For all of his articulate monologues, Thanos is just crazy.
It also contradicts his earlier quote about resisting the temptation of the stones. In the end, Thanos not only wants complete control over the universe, but he also wants people to be grateful to him for ruling their lives.
4. “As long as there are those that remember what was, there will always be those that are unable to accept what can be.”
This is another iconic line from the final confrontation between Thanos and the Avengers. He blames the Avengers for restarting their fight, telling them they could not live with their failure.
This line also introduces us to his grand plan to destroy the universe this time and make a new one.
The line shows us Thanos’s delusion. The villain genuinely believed that people would accept the disappearance of half of their loved ones and not do anything to fight against it.
He is surprised to realize that people, particularly superheroes, will not lie down and accept him remaking the world. It also shows us how brave our heroes are. They will not accept an unjust future, even if it seems as inevitable as Thanos.
5. “What I’m about to do to your stubborn, annoying little planet…I’m gonna enjoy it. Very much.”
This memorable line comes in one of the darkest scenes in the movie. The final battle between Thanos and the Avengers starts, and it looks like Thanos and his army will win easily.
Before they can reach that point, Thanos stops to explain his plans for the people of Earth. He says that his previous destruction and genocides were for the sake of a larger goal, but this time, it’s personal.
The line is terrifying because it raises the stakes. Our heroes must get it together. Otherwise, the planet is in huge danger. The line also cuts through Thanos’s self-delusion.
The villain had this grand idea of himself as a savior of the universe, making difficult choices for the greater good. Still, he’s just a power-hungry killer with a terrifying agenda.
6. “I don’t even know who you are.”
This is one of the most heartbreaking lines in the movie. During the final battle, the Scarlet Witch finally confronts Thanos, who ruined her happiness.
She tells him, “You took everything from me,” and he responds with this line – but, of course, you don’t mess with the Scarlett Witch.
Even the audience winces at this casual dismissal of our beloved character’s pain and grief. It shows us how heartless Thanos is, even though he claims that everything he does is for the greater good. He doesn’t care about all the lives he ruins in the process.
7. “And that is destiny fulfilled.”
This is Thanos’s response to his death, which he sees thanks to interference from a time-traveling Nebula that allows him to access her memories.
It raises the stakes of the whole movie—we thought that the Avengers killed Thanos and now just have to undo his legacy, but now we see that he was planning for their attack. He isn’t entirely done yet.
It also gives us insight into the madness of Thanos’ ideas. He is so focused on his mission that he doesn’t feel a thing about seeing his death, even though his two daughters are shocked. All he cares about is fulfilling his destiny, no matter the cost.
Thanos is one of the Marvel villains we love to hate. His delusions of grandeur and destructive actions are paired with a compelling philosophy and memorable lines.
His grand speeches make it much more satisfying when he finally gets what he deserves.
